Conversación con Benjamin Cheever
Esta entrevista se mantuvo en 1989 y se adjuntó como apéndice a mi tesis doctoral sobre John Cheever, leída en 1991.
Benjamin Cheever, el hijo mayor del escritor, con el que mantuve correspondencia acerca de los escritos de su padre, veía en la dinámica del cuento, y no tanto en su posible conclusión, la verdadera realidad del ambiente: “…the spinning is what matters”, solía recordar. Es decir, lo que verdaderamente cuenta es esa alternancia de imágenes contrastadas y cómo se frotan unas con otras, las que reflejan el ambiente social empobrecido y las que se refieren al romántico Nadador.
La idea de ser convencional o no serlo también la recrea Benjamin Cheever que define a su padre como un hombre nada convencional, que paradójicamente elige vivir tradicionalmente. Cito textualmente: “I don´t know why such an unconventional man lived such a conventional life, but he meant to. And, yes, I think it had to do with his love for his wife.” Yo creo que ahí había necesidad de pertenecer al mundo, tener un estatus, una vida social que, por supuesto, una vez conseguida, le inquietaba y le hacía sentirse ajeno y diferente.
También la religión tiene mucho que ver con John Cheever y su hijo Benjamin lo recuerda, como él mismo lo hiciera en muchas ocasiones. Padre e hijo coinciden en la idea de que iba a la Iglesia “a dar gracias”. Esa iglesia episcopaliana del Dios cercano y amigo con el que el autor se identificaba y que seguramente tenía que ver con su necesidad de contemplar el mundo desde una perspectiva de orden. Ante esta idea, Benjamin Cheever dice que cree que había algo más en su espiritualidad que la necesidad de buscar cobijo.
Surge también en la conversación la idea del alter-ego, que viene a ser la evolución llevada a extremos de su universo singular y distinto. En sucesivos libros, Bullet Park, y sobre todo en Falconer, se aprecia más el compromiso de transgredir las normas, lo que en los cuentos se mantiene como tensión entre participar del mundo y quedarse en su rincón, en sucesivas historias elige la idea del fratricidio como reafirmación de ese ser diferente y tan ignorado, que sin embargo lleva dentro.
Mantenemos la incógnita y, como su propio hijo Benjamin indica, no vamos a ir más allá. Dejemos la última palabra a la intuición del posible lector: “If you explain everything perfectly then you´ve lost something, and what you´ve lost is what matters.” Admiremos juntos la sutileza, la perfecta cadencia de los tiempos, que modificados, recrean y recuerdan, como dice Scott Donaldson, uno de sus biógrafos, el realismo mágico de Borges y García Márquez. La idea es más que evidente justo en este cuento que invitamos a leer. “El Nadador.”
