Esta semana vamos a contextualizar personajes. Un personaje no surge de la nada, viene de una familia, nace en un lugar con un paisaje determinado, con los problemas políticos y económicos que sean, o paraísos económicos, también, tiene amigos concretos, pertenece o no a ciertos grupos, se mueve en determinados ambientes, va al cine, al fútbol, a la discoteca, al casino…

En cualquier texto literario, todos los personajes, se cuente o no, tienen este contexto. El autor puede responder perfectamente a todas las preguntas sobre el medio en el que se mueve su personaje. Y si no lo sabe, no lo habrá construido bien. Una de las cosas increíbles de la escritura es cómo surgen estos señores o señoras con absoluta identidad.

Un escritor es capaz de tener estas visiones de seres con una identidad clarísima porque ha dedicado su vida a mirar a todos los seres humanos que le rodean. Y sin apuntarlo, se ha dado cuenta a base de ver reacciones, gestos, miradas, formas de vestir, formas de hablar, respuestas a situaciones concretas, decisiones, sentimientos, silencios, insultos, discursos, besos, abrazos, peleas, enfermedades, fiestas… de la lógica intrínseca del comportamiento humano. De manera que sabe mezclar miles de datos y llegar a concebir un personaje absolutamente creíble. La credibilidad es necesaria para que exista un personaje. La mayoría de películas o libros que se caen es porque es imposible creerse a los personajes, la frase del lector o espectador suele ser: «ese personaje no hay quién se lo crea».

Pues el ejercicio de hoy consiste en reconstruir el contexto de un personaje secundario de un relato que está en la sección de relatos y se puede leer on line, lo he puesto en un link. Se trata de La buena gente del campo de Flannery O’Connor. Y el personaje es el vendedor de biblias.

Las preguntas que hay que responder con la imaginación y la información del texto son:

¿Dónde ha nacido?
¿Qué tipo de familia ha tenido?
¿Qué notas sacaba en el colegio?
¿Cómo es físicamente?
¿Iba y va a misa?
¿Está casado?
¿Sus viajes son largos o cortos?
¿Cómo va vestido?
¿A dónde va cuando termina el relato?
¿Duerme bien?
¿A qué hora se levanta?

  1. ¿es obligatorio hacerlo de ese relato? Podemos hablar de otros personajes…
    El ejercicio es muy interesante aplicado a cualquier texto y a cualquiera…. imagínate la infancia de cualquier politico, (persona de poder) su vida en el cole forjándose su vocación de servicio público, mientras fantasea con ser respetado y fotografíado por todos. Mientras se imagina pasando a formar parte de la HISTORIA. Esa adolescencia metiendo los codos en un partido, trepando por la escalera del poder, esperando agazapado una oportunidad para salir destacado.
    Imagínate a su madre.

  2. Albert siempre ha sido un inadaptado. Conozco a Albert Alsoon desde siempre. Desde el primer día de colegio nos emparejaron en el pupitre por haber nacido los dos el día 16 de junio. Ahora sé que colocan a los alumnos por orden alfabético, o bien por estatura, pero al profesor Jameson aquel «primer día de colegio» se le ocurrió colocarnos por fecha de nacimiento y eso condicionó nuestra vida para siempre.
    Yo soy su único amigo. Como nací a las siete de la mañana, mientras él lo hacía al mediodía, y soy, por tanto, cinco horas mas viejo que él, siempre he ejercido sobre Albert un poder dominante.
    Albert es el menor de dos hermanos, y llevaba una vida familiar bastante apacible hasta que su padre, propietario de la mejor pastelería de todo el condado de Gleztom, se fugó con una de las empleadas de la tienda que contaba solo con veintitres años, es decir la mitad que Mr. Alsoon y veintidos menos que la madre de Albert, cuando es este aún no había cumplido los nueve años.
    Su hermano mayor se fue entonces a vivir al lejano condado de Cannaris, con unos tíos que le empleaban en las mas duras tareas del campo y solo se veían por navidades.
    Albert se criaba con el aspecto de un niño bobalicón, gordito, torpe, nada dotado para las prácticas deportivas, por lo que se dedicaba a ayudar al pastor Bilwader en los oficios dominicales, tarea ésta en la que yo también colaboraba hasta que un día desapareció todo el dinero de la colecta y el pastor Bilwader encendido por la ira nos hechó la culpa a nosotros; como yo no había sido deduje que Albert era un ladrón y algún día terminaría en la cárcel.
    Por eso cuando aquel día se presentó en mi casa con un libro encuadernado en piel, del que colgaban diversas cintas de colores, me quedé estupefacto, «he encontrado un empleo como vendedor de biblias, me dijo, y necesito tu ayuda»; eso es lo mismo que había ocurrido a lo largo de nuestros diecinueve años de existencia. Utilicé la cinta roja para marcar un pasaje del Genesis en el que Eva y Adán eran expulsados del Edén y eran conminados a «ganar el pan con el sudor de la frente»; la amarilla, que era de idéntico color a la camisa de Albert, para situarla en el prólogo del evangelio de San Juan donde dice: «… la luz brilla en las tinieblas, pero las tinieblas no recibieron a la luz…»; por fin, la morada la situé en un párrafo del Testamento Antiguo en el que ponía: «No atesoréis en la tierra donde la polilla y el orín corroen y los ladrones roban y socavan, atesorad mas bien para el cielo, porque allá donde tengáis vuestro tesoro allí también tendréis vuestro corazón». Una semana entera tardó en aprenderse la tres frases, lo que me hizo recordar, que en las funciones del colegio, Albert siempre figuraba como atrezzo ante la imposibilidad de aprenderse un papel por pequeño que este fuese.
    En su nuevo trabajo había sido asignado a una zona rural cercana al condado, cobraría cuatro libras esterlinas y treinta y cinco peniques por cada ejemplar vendido. Albert tenía ahora que inventarse un pasado y hasta un nombre: Manley Pointer, el resto ya lo conocéis; el resto, excepto que la venta de biblias para Albert Alsoon era solo la llave con la que violar los cofres, anhelos de sus infantiles impulsos. Pronto terminará en la cárcel.

  3. No es obligatorio hacerlo de ese relato, para los vagos que no quieran leerlo pueden hacerlo con cualquier otro. N.O.Z ha hecho el supertrabajo de además hacer un texto literario, que comentaremos el lunes, pero puede ser sólo contestar las preguntas.
    Lo de la madre me parece muy interesante, pero en un político, quizás me inclino a pensar que el padre es el que más aporta a la vocación.

    Que manera más potente de contar la decisión que supone no robar… o empezar a hacerlo.
    El personaje interesante es el que se salva, y lo hace porque el si es capaz de contarlo y de leer … aunque sea la biblia, pedazo de libro dónde los haya!!
