Me he encontrado con un libro comprado hace veinte años y sin leer. No lo leí por pereza mental en ese momento, pero sabía que era una joya. Como cualquiera de estos relatos tan bien escritos, es difícil reseñarlo, porque alrededor del tema fundamental hay miles de otros temas importantes, una estructura que parece estudiada al milímetro y de resultado natural y simple y un final abierto y cerrado a la vez.

Primero decir que Carlos Casares era un hombre honesto, a lo mejor me repito un poco con este adjetivo, pero lo encuentro fundamental. En todos sus libros, unos gustarán más y otros menos, el narrador provoca una emoción que tiene que ver con el mismo acto de vivir enfrentándose a una paradoja contínua.

El protagonista es un obispo en una ciudad inspirada en Ourense en los años veinte, pero podría ocurrir en cualquier lugar. No es un relato localista, actitudes humanas.

Lo que llama la atención es la capacidad de crear un personaje bondadoso, tan difícil y tan pocas veces presente en la Literatura. Por supuesto no se trata de un bobalicón, sino que precisamente, esa actitud de bondad le lleva al drama.

Un hombre que diariamente lee los dos periódicos locales, el conservador y el liberal, rodeado de fanáticos que le exigen que ejerza su poder para acabar con el cinematógrafo recién llegado a la ciudad, informado de una violencia que se va creando por el enfrentamiento de ideas, volviendo a su infancia amable para sobrevivir, sale de su palacio para entrar en el mundo de una manera no ortodoxa.

El poder que consiguen los fanáticos, increíble e inaudito, gente poco inteligente pero con una voluntad descomunal, radica precisamente en la duda intrínseca a la inteligencia, que no genera una acción al mismo nivel.

Y además estos fanáticos tienen una santa, y ahí mete el humor en la actitud del obispo frente a la levitación. ¿Cómo actúa el fanático cuando no se toma en serio su milagro?

Hay libros que cuentan la insignificancia de Hitler para remarcar el absurdo del totalitarismo. Aquí, insignificantes hablan de tú a tú a insignificantes creando un auténtico poder al que resulta ya imposible enfrentarse desde el sentido común.

Juega con el tiempo narrativo de manera increíble, sorprendiendo al lector en cada acto narrativo con el que se va acercando al final, donde ya da igual cómo termine, ya lo que está ocurriendo es el final del drama, el comienzo de una etapa fuera de la lógica intrínseca a la vida.

La cita de Paul Valery con la que abre el libro resume muy bien la lucha interna de este hombre. Vete, malvado, no puedes nada contra mi corazón.

El libro está traducido a muchas lenguas, va a ser difícil encontrarlo en castellano porque es una edición un poco antigua, la novela es de 1980. Está editado por Luis de Caralt con traducción de Basilio Losada.

  1. He abandonado mi puesto ante el ordenador para correr a buscar esta obra; efectivamente no está en la biblioteca. Me sorprende que Casares busque el protagonismo de un principe de la Iglesia para su novela, me sorprende que dote al personaje de inteligencia y apertura de ideas, me sorprende que un obispo lea el periódico liberal. Me sorprende todo esto porque en la literatura parece que priman los gestos anticlericales, y no hay relatos en los que un hombre de la Iglesia pueda ser, además, una persona honesta, generosa y entregada a la causa… a la causa que sea.

    Pero me voy a detener en la descripción que se nos hace del narrador, cuando se nos dice nos provoca la emoción que nace del mismo acto de vivir; y lo hago desde la crítica de que el acto de vivir en sí mismo no es emocionante. Viven los guisantes -sin esqueleto-, viven personas en el único afán de acumular bienes y riqueza, crecen por doquier quienes hacen del egoísmo un modo de recorrer el camino de la vida; vivir es emocionante cuando tienes el alma llena de sentimientos nobles, los mismos que adornan a nuestro protagonista: la honestidad, la generosidad y la entrega.

  3. También N.O.Z, te puedo contar que Carlos Casares era amigo del teólogo Torres Queiruga, un teólogo muy interesante y de mucho peso en la Iglesia y que está viviendo curiosamente, como el obispo del relato, un momento muy complicado con los conservadores.
    Uno de sus libros está prologado por Casares donde dice cosas como:
    «Confieso que…si este libro lo hubieran
    podido leer muchas personas como yo, cuando tenía dieciséis o
    diecisiete años, nuestra vida sería diferente. (…) Este es el Dios
    en el que a muchos nos gustaría haber creído en los años tormentosos
    de la adolescencia y en el que podemos creer de nuevo cuantos vemos ya
    no muy lejano el horizonte y el mar sereno de la vejez. Uno se da
    cuenta de pronto de que Dios tenía que ser así y no podía ser de otra manera».
    Casares, quizás esto es más acertado de lo que he dicho, era un hombre sin prejuicios, precisamente, tiene una novela donde trata este tema adolescente con motivaciones religiosas y pérdida de fe: «Xoguetes para un tempo prohibido».

A los diecisés o a los diecisiete años el Dios de los cristianos formaba parte de un vida de una manera total y envolvente, pero yo no leí los libros del teólogo Torres, mi libro de cabecera era el Manual de Teología Dogmática de Ludving Ott, editado por Herder, y del que aún resuena en mi cabeza «extra ecclesiam nulla salus», o lo que es lo mismo, fuera de la iglesia católica no hay salvación.

    Por eso cuando me escribes ahora ese prólogo de C. Casares que dice que existe y que en él «podemos creer de nuevo cuantos vemos ya
    no muy lejano el horizonte y el mar sereno de la vejez. Uno se da
    cuenta de pronto de que Dios tenía que ser así y no podía ser de otra manera», me conmuevo, porque ahora que no tengo el don de la fe, necesito abrazarme a esas palabras; palabras que me acercan a un concepto parecido al de la eternidad, en el amor reposado de la madurez y junto al corazón de la amada.   5. Cómo es Dios?
    sólo nos quedan las Escrituras. Los teólogos en ocasiones fabrican un Dios a la medida de la limitada razón humana, en contra de las Escrituras. No hay milagros, no hay infierno… etc. Pues están equivocados. Si quitamos lo que nos estorba, lo que no es moderno ni políticamente aceptable par nuestro ritmo de vida caemos en la soberbia humana de negar lo que no entendemos. Tampoco entendemos la física cuántica y ahí está, ni la evolución y la admitimos.
    Queiruga es un teólogo que niega en Dios todo lo que la razón no entiende. Habla del amor de Dios pero no de la justicia divina, sin la cual este mundo sería injusto, y no puede haber amor sin justicia.
