La cuarta persona, una nueva vía literaria

Me encantaría poder enviar a Walter Benjamín el “Dicen” de Susana Sánchez Arins. Lo llamo el “Dicen” porque en Galicia lo llaman o “Seique” y me he acostumbrado a sentirlo así, como un artefacto literario, como un libro que no entra en las clasificaciones literarias en uso.

En 1930 Walter Benjamin escribió Crisis de la novela al hilo de Berlin Alexander Platz de Döblin y en 1936 El narrador. Consideraciones sobre la obra de Nicolai Leskov.

En ambos textos reivindica una prosa susceptible de ser contada oralmente y que dé lugar a una experiencia colectiva. La novela, para él, es una expresión burguesa que participa en la construcción de un mundo individualizado sin posibilidad de comunicación. La voz del novelista procede de la soledad, de la individualidad, mientras que la voz del narrador nace de la experiencia propia o transmitida. Benjamin se refiere a la experiencia como algo que ha ocurrido y que debe estar en boca de todos. La novela no está basada en la experiencia sino en hechos ficcionados, inventados.

Considera la narración como algo útil, una utilidad que puede ser moral o de consideración práctica, mientras que la novela expone lo inconmensurable de la vida humana para poner de manifiesto la desorientación vital vigente en su momento. “La narración tiene, abierta o secretamente, su utilidad. Esa utilidad puede consistir a veces en una moral, otras, en una recomendación práctica, en un refrán o en una regla de la vida; en todos los casos, el narrador es el hombre que da un consejo a quien lo oye… “

Para Benjamin, la narración está basada en la memoria que sustenta la tradición y una red de narraciones que dan sentido. Piensa que mientras la épica pertenece a la comunidad, el lector de novelas lee en soledad.

Su crítica a la novela tiene que ver con un interés por promover la narración como elemento constitutivo de comunidad, un interés olvidado por la moda novelesca, empeñada en crear lecturas individualistas. Sin embargo, creo, la novela aporta algo fundamental a la comunidad, un espíritu crítico, una búsqueda de aquellos elementos dentro de la sociedad que no permiten el desarrollo de cada uno de sus miembros, y por lo tanto, la vida comunitaria.

Y aquí está Susana Sánchez Arins con el “Dicen”. Y aquí ocurre algo fantástico. No hay un personaje épico que salve a la comunidad o que deje un refrán o regla de la vida y que dé lugar a que su hazaña se repita oralmente para que el pueblo tome conciencia de sí mismo y camine hacia lugares mejores. Pero tampoco hay un personaje individual sufridor, no hay una intención de exponer lo inconmensurable de la vida humana. La razón por la que me gustaría enviarle el libro a Walter Benjamin es porque creo que le encantaría ver una nueva forma de contar que va más allá de las posibilidades que había en el siglo XX.

Susana escribe un texto cuyo protagonista es la propia comunidad. ¿Qué significa esto? Significa que estamos en el siglo XXI y que han quedado atrás aquellas novelas en primera persona en las que el narrador era incapaz de ver más allá de sí mismo, igual que ha quedado atrás el uso indiscriminado de un narrador omnisciente del siglo XIX que no sirve para dar cuenta de nuestra sensibilidad actual.

Y nos preguntamos qué tipo de sensibilidad tenemos hoy en día y en ello están todos los autores que escriben desde la necesidad y gracias a ellos podemos entrever algunas cosas: por ejemplo, una toma de conciencia de nuestro ser entre otros, de la cadena de relaciones que nos configura. Y solo hay que ver cómo, además de estar presente en la literatura, la comunidad es uno de los grandes temas de la filosofía actual.

Esta toma de conciencia de nuestro ser con otros modifica nuestra forma de contar, o al menos, modifica la forma de contar de aquellos narradores que buscan las lógicas actuales de la condición humana. Y es posible que de repente aparezca un libro como el “Dicen” que sea capaz de usar una cuarta persona tácita, el nosotros.

Le hubiera encantado a Benjamin ver una narradora que deja hablar a todos: a sus familiares, a las canciones populares, a los que escriben ensayos, al silencio violento producido por un error social. Un hablar de todos que se convierte en un nosotros, porque nos ha pasado eso, ha ocurrido de verdad (esa es la parte de narración) y al contarlo, podemos ver en qué ha fallado la sociedad, cómo la violencia ha destruido la confianza en la vida cotidiana, elemento imprescindible para conservar la comunidad (esa es la parte de novela).

El “Dicen” parece que ha sido capaz de reconciliar esos dos mundos: la épica del pasado narrativo y la crítica social que representa la novela. Por eso es uno de los libros más modernos que me he encontrado últimamente. Susana cuenta que todos los recursos literarios que utiliza los ha sacado de la tradición, que hasta hay un coro al estilo de las tragedias griegas y que por eso no entiende que digan que su libro es muy moderno. Precisamente esa es una de las causas, no romper con la tradición, volver a la narración como una forma de cohesión social. Es un libro que apetece leer en alto, que recuerda lo que pasó, que busca imágenes que todos reconocemos. Pero también es un libro que no idealiza, que no tiene un héroe, que pone encima de la mesa la posibilidad de la violencia quizás como una parte de la condición humana de la que hay que ser consciente y de alguna forma exorcizar.

El “Dicen” abre un nuevo camino para contar, esa cuarta persona que está deseando salir al ruedo literario.
