Voz narrativa. Ejercicio. El agujero negro de Vargas Llosa como ejemplo
En lugar de hablar de los tipos de narrador utilizados en la Historia de la Literatura, es preferible buscar narradores. Parece que uno puede escoger un narrador a la carta, primera persona, omnisciente, segunda persona, pegado… para empezar a contar algo, pero cada historia tiene su narrador y al final es la voz que la cuenta la que nos convence. Si esa voz es como la música de ascensor, entonces, poco puede transmitir.
El problema fundamental de los libros narrativos publicados en estos momentos es que no tienen voz, cogen el narrador que esté de moda o el que más se adecue para contar su tipo de historia y tiran por ahí. Siendo esto lo más importante de un libro, la crítica se lo salta y da por válidos textos que no llegan al oído de un lector acostumbrado a distinguir voces.
Lo primero que hay que ejercitar, creo que es la identificación de voces: hay que escuchar voces, distinguir voces, hacer oído con narradores cotidianos.
La voz siempre tiene un tono. En música, el tono mayor se utiliza par expresar alegría, apertura, expansión, y el tono menor para expresar tristeza, melancolía, intimidad.
Las personas utilizan distintos tonos para hablar, altivo, delicado, áspero, dulce, suave y así hasta infinitos adjetivos. Y esa variedad de tonos los usa en función de lo que quiera transmitir. Si uno está enfadado, utiliza un tono duro, cortante, ácido. Si uno quiere transmitir cariño, será dulce, y así hasta el infinito. Detrás de un tono, siempre hay una intención.
La voz narrativa es una voz con intención, tiene un tono, por eso cada historia tiene su narrador. Esto tiene que ver con el punto de vista, que veremos en otro momento.
Por ahora, el ejercicio de esta semana, consiste en buscar algún discurso, conversación, apelación, lo que sea, real, y descifrar el tono y por lo tanto, la intención del narrador.
Dejo aquí un ejemplo, el comienzo del texto de Vargas llosa que responde a la intención de calificar como “fantástica” una novela mal escrita, lo de mal escrita lo dice él. (La trilogía Millenium). El que quiera leerlo entero, está en: artículo en El País de Vargas Llosa sobre Millenium
Comencé a leer novelas a los 10 años y ahora tengo 73. En todo ese tiempo debo haber leído centenares, acaso millares de novelas, releído un buen número de ellas y algunas, además, las he estudiado y enseñado. Sin jactancia puedo decir que toda esta experiencia me ha hecho capaz de saber cuándo una novela es buena, mala o pésima y, también, que ella ha envenenado a menudo mi placer de lector al hacerme descubrir a poco de comenzar una novela sus costuras, incoherencias, fallas en los puntos de vista, la invención del narrador y del tiempo, todo aquello que el lector inocente (el «lector-hembra» lo llamaba Cortázar para escándalo de las feministas) no percibe, lo que le permite disfrutar más y mejor que el lector-crítico de la ilusión narrativa….
Primero se presenta como gran lector y después comienza a resaltar el valor de la “inocencia narrativa”, esa literatura pura a la que sólo los poco ilustrados, las hembras, tienen el honor de llegar. Para eso, nada mejor que olvidar que el narrador de esta novela no tiene voz, que no se puede visualizar nada, que la mitad de los diálogos sobran, que el tiempo no está trabajado para hacer más larga la lectura, y que el proceso de lectura consiste en leer y leer palabras sobrantes como alimento de ansiedad por saber qué va a ocurrir.
El lector que lee interpretando, lee literalmente lo que dice Vargas Llosa: que lleva 63 años leyendo. Que conoce las técnicas narrativas. Que se ha dedicado a la enseñanza de esas técnicas narrativas. Que ha estudiado a fondo obras literarias. Y como consecuencia: cree que el lector inocente disfruta más que el lector crítico leyendo. Que la ilusión narrativa es como la ilusión mágica, tiene que ver con no descubrir el truco. Que las hembras tienen más facilidad para la inocencia, para no poder descubrir los entresijos de un texto. Que las feministas se escandalizan por cualquier cosa.
Entre la premisa y la conclusión hay un agujero negro que constituye un misterio de verdad interesante, mucho más que la azarosa vida de la dulce Lisbeth. ¿Qué le ha pasado a Vargas Llosa?
Inocencia es una palabra curiosa, yo lo asocio a los santos inocentes, inocente-inocente y todas esas cosas que tienen que ver con contar mentiras para reírte cuando el otro se las cree.
Soy muy poco amigo de los «boom», de los éxitos arrolladores y, por eso, he establecido en el estante de mi cuba una cortapisa que impida el paso a esas novelas que llaman «Millennium». Hace unos días me pedían opinión, y aunque es propio a nuestra naturaleza que las opiniones sean cambiantes, en este caso sigue siendo la misma de entonces, y lo que entonces dije mas o menos es que ni aunque el mismo Papa de Roma viniese a pedírmelo, pero no el Papa Benedicto XVI, sino el anterior, ese santo súbito que adoptó el nombre de Juan Pablo II, y que de presentarse habría que pensar que lo hacía en el nombre de Dios, leería esas novelas.
De Vargas Llosa sólo se puede desprender que el tono de su artículo y su intención, están imbuídos de la «pandemia de corrupción política» que el mismo cita aplicándoselo a otros; y ¿por qué? pues seguramente porque él que ha sido político y se presentó nada menos a las elecciones presidenciales de su país de origen, conoce bien que no se puede enfrentar a las corrientes mayoritarias y estas le llevan por el camino de la aceptación de que una novela imperfecta, es excepcional. Es excepcional porque sus ejemplares se venden por cientos de millares ¿y qué?. Claro que su astucia también le impulsa a escribir que una novela nunca alcanzará la perfección de una poesía… como si todas estas fuesen bellas, y aquellas todas imperfectas ¡hasta ahí poníamos llegar!.
Voy a rezar durante todo el día un mantra: que el destino me aparte de las malas novelas, y de los pésimos críticos.
La lectura de Vargas Llosa es coherente:
Money makes the world go around….. y de tantas vueltas que ha dado el pobre esta mareado. ¡Ojo! la lectura desde el mareo es dificil y tiene mucho mérito.
Si Millenium lo lee «todo el mundo» el quiere que todo el mundo le lea, sobre todo las hembras superficiales. Quiere que le quieran a cualquier precio.
Perece que Mario fantasea con esos labios carnales rellenos de botox susurrandole lecturas inocentes en la punta de la oreja.
¡Alguién tiene que presentarle a Berlusconi ya!
Mario, Viila Certosa te espera!!!…. como te lo vas a pasar leyendo.
Voy a hacer de abogado del diablo: todo escritor desea que le lea todo el mundo. Dicho esto el fenómeno «best-seller» tiene ciertos trucos que gustan: es fácil y sobre todo te deja meterte dentro de la historia y participar. Luego están la dosis medida de sexo, violencia, matrimonio, muerte y todo el morbo está servido. Otra cosa: están de moda las féminas fuertes pero humanas y también la mujer «potente». Igual lo que habría que desenmascarar es la moda. Habría que decirle al señor Vargas LLosa: «no es original puesto que sigue la moda y la moda es reivindicativa de la mujer débil fuerte o fuerte débil, el tatuaje y todos esos signos comunes que gustan tanto». No he leído el libro. He visto la película y falta coherencia, está deslabazada, como hecha con prisas. L. A. Confidential le da cien vueltas.
Los best-sellers estan muy bien, su nombre lo dice todo. Son los libros que mejor y más se venden, es un criterio muy usado en la sociedad de mercado. Es como cuando vas al corte inglés y preguntas por cualquier producto y el vendedor te dice «esta muy bien, se vende mucho» eso te da confianza, te transmite seguridad, te coloca en el territorio del acierto: si se vende mucho es porque funciona, es una apuesta segura. Muchas personas antes que yo han decidido comprar eso mismo, si son muchos no se pueden equivocar y si se equivocan no pasa nada, ¿quién nos va a señalar?
Esto es perfecto excepto por una cosa; que la literatura aunque se venda no es un producto de consumo, es algo más, mucho más. Es una forma de conocer y entender el mundo, es una forma de cambiarlo y de hacerlo mejor.
El problema que tienen los best seller es el tiempo que duran. Son los más vendidos hasta que llega otro nuevo que los extingue. ¿Quién se acuerda de las novelas que leía Madame Bovary?, todas best sellers de su época. Yo no.
Luego están los «all time best sellers». Eso es otra historia, El Quijote lleva años vendiendose y Shakespeare y Faulkner y Sallinger y La Biblia no te digo. Esos que trascienden sus épocas y sus modas son los que de verdad venden. Pero tienen un fallo los derechos de autor caducan y las editoriales presentan cuentas de resultados anualmente. Por eso siempre será mejor publicar un Millenium que Las Olas que lleva vendiendose casi un siglo y lo que le queda.
Dicho esto, viene Mario y nos recuerda que es mayor, que ya no le queda tanto tiempo y que ya no le interesa la inmortalidad ni la posteridad. El se siente viejo como lector y echa de menos su inocencia perdida. Añora esa época cuando su desconocimiento narrativo le permitía empalmarse con cualquier chorrada publicada. Él, en su ocaso intelectual necesita cositas que le distraigan, algo que le una al lector-hembra. A lo mejor se quiere ahorcar con un cordón umbilical….
¡Que alguién le de una viagra narrativa a ver si se le va toda la sangre a la cabeza y recupera el juicio y la vergüenza!
Vargas Llosa resumió así (en un «libro» suyo que precisamente se presentaba ayer) su admiración eterna hacia el creador de Rayuela: «Alguien genéticamente vacunado contra toda forma de oportunismo, algo nada fácil entre los escritores»… este Mario, peruano de Arequipa (no confundir nunca con el uruguayo de Paso de los Toros), ocasional hacedor de panegíricos de la trilogía que nos ocupa, sabe bien de lo que habla, porque lo experimenta en primera persona.
Leído a Diógenes. Muy de acuerdo con él en su opinión a vuelapluma sobre Vargasllosa, a quien se ve fascinado en la foto mirando a Aitana, tanto como por la heroína esta de Millenium. Lo de Aitana tiene un pase, porque aunque cumpliendo años, sigue siendo follable, o al menos mirable, deseable, vislumbrable. Como Diógenes tengo yo una cierta fobia a estos booms de novela-que-todo-el-mundo-lee, un poco al estilo que-todo-dios-es-del-madrid, y vargas se hace el moderno, el sin prejuicios, el hombre de mundo, el amigo de garcíadelaconcha, para más inri…

Una vida escribiendo y al final te retratas.
Como escarpias se me han puesto todos los pelos de mi cuerpo, cuando he leído que en los comentarios había uno de José Eulogio Gárate, José Eulogio Gárate Ormaechea «el ingeniero del área», el ídolo de mi infancia, el héroe de tantas batallas desiguales con los «vecinos de enfrente», el hombre generoso y límpido, al que jamás oí una queja o un exabrupto, nunca una declaración fuera de tono, ninguna palabra malsonante.
No podía ser él hablando de Vargas Llosa, de su amigo don Víctor García del Molusco Bivalvo (como le llaman en Argentina para no pronunciar «¡la Concha!»), y de Aitana… tan apetecible; sólo debe ser una coincidencia
¡Feliz coincidencia!, paradoja del destino, que me produce un gozo indescriptible en los sentidos, con una letras escritas por un desconocido amigo, al que ya consideraré siempre un hermano.
Llevaba tres días viviendo en aquella terraza. Era la primera planta de las dieciocho de un señorial edificio rodeado de jardines y desde donde estaba sentado, encima de un estante, lo vi todo.
Aquel hombre a pesar de hacer una noche de calor asfixiante, un calor pegajoso de los que dan sofocos, se estaba poniendo guantes y pasamontañas, antes de iniciar la escala de la casa por el canalón. Si no fuese por sus evidentes propósitos, su habilidad sería digna de elogio y en un santiamén se plantó en la terraza sin ser visto.
Al oír ruidos llegó hasta allí la anciana, única habitante de la casa. El ladrón debía saber que vivía sola.
– «¿Como has entrado por la terraza, hijo»?
– «¿Qué hijo, ni qué hostias, anda pa’ dentro, ¡vieja!».
Vi como la ataba en el sillón y la ponía una mordaza, mientras las anciana temblaba de angustia y de miedo. El ladrón buscaba y rebuscaba por toda la casa objetos de valor y dinero, pero el botín le parecío insuficiente, «una mierda» dijo el canalla, y pensó en pedir un rescate.
– «¿Tienes hijos? ¡Vieja!», preguntó antes de quitarle la mordaza.
– «Dos», contestó la anciana, presa del pánico.
– «Dime sus teléfonos que les voy a llamar».
– «Los números están anotados en ese papel», musitó, más que hablar, señalando un folio escrito con grandes caracteres pegado en la pared junto al viejo y negro teléfono.
El ladrón se sacó un teléfono móvil de un bolsillo lateral del pantalón, manipuló unas teclas para ocultar su número al receptor, y marcó el primer número y luego el otro sin obtener respuesta.
– «Es que, mis hijos, no descuelgan las llamadas ocultas».
Entonces, el ladrón, descolgó el viejo y negro teléfono de la pared y volvió a marcar ambos números con idéntico resultado.
– «Es que tampoco descuelgan si quien llama soy yo».
En este ejercicio, yo, El Trasgo, soy el narrador; ellos, los hijos de la anciana, son el agujero negro. El ladrón y Vargas Llosa nada.
Corrección al ejercicio del trasgo.
Para el lector, el narrador no es el trasgo, porque la única información que tiene de él es la que le da el texto: un yo que desde hace tres días vive en la terraza de un edificio. Hay que tener cuidado con la información que se da, si pones algo tan inusual como que alguien vive en una terraza, el lector se queda con eso y busca una respuesta, si no la va a haber, es mejor no ponerlo.
Por otro lado, después el ladrón sube a la terraza, no sabemos si es la misma, si lo es, tampoco sabemos la relación con la vieja, puede ser un hijo escondido, pero hay que contarlo de manera que quede más claro.
Lo que cuenta está muy bien, el tema de los teléfonos, pero la post data: yo, el trasgo, soy el narrador; ellos, los hijos de la anciana, el agujero negro, el ladrón y Vargas Llosa, nada, es el lugar desde el que está pensado y el narrador debería escribir sintiendo lo que cuenta desde ahí.
Las explicaciones son contrarias a la literatura, que funciona mostrando.
Todo lo que he dicho al principio viene por escribir sin tener en cuenta que el que va a leer no está en nuestra cabeza, podemos dar por hecho cosas que los otros no saben.

Como sabes yo no soy humano y no me muevo con vuestros mismos resortes, con los sentimientos que animan vuestros actos, ni con la ortodoxia literaria que debiera.
Esta tarde he hablado con otro amigo del bosque y me ha sugerido que coja unas vacaciones, creo que es lo mejor, así no turbaré vuestras clases, no seré una piedra de escándalo y no os cansaré con las cosas que sabéis: os las he contado tantas veces en estas páginas, y por ello mismo pensaba que no era necesario repetir: que cuando bebo me hago visible a los humanos, que mis resacas son espectaculares, y que la última la pasé en la terraza de la anciana. Pero tu tienes, como siempre, razón: para un lector nuevo todo resulta muy extraño, deseaba que no para tí, seguro como estoy de que has leído con interés, y hasta con cariño mis intervenciones.
Me las piro al Brasil, allí los bosques son frondosos y las relaciones menos comprometidas, allí podré ser el que soy sin barreras ni cortapisas… y si algún día, como hoy, encuentro una máquina de estas en las que me pueda comunicar con todos los lectores perdidos del mundo, lo haré de nuevo en estas páginas, que empezaron siendo tuyas, pero cada día son mas nuestras.

Lo malo de ser trasgo es la soledad infinita que le acompaña. Porque, ¿cómo creer a un trasgo? Y siento que no haya entendido el comentario al ejercicio, sobre todo, que no haya entendido que es un ejercicio y que se trata de sacarle jugo para aprender conceptos. Esto es prueba y error y me parece que las correcciones no hacen falta.
Lo normal es que, los novelas que se escriben para ser los mejor vendidos, sean más parecidos a un guión cinematográfico que a una historia bien hecha. En un guión de cine, que también puede estar bien o mal escrito, el director aprovechará todo un sin fin de recursos técnicos, con empleados y mucho dinero, para pasar la historia a un formato potencialmente mucho, mucho más rentable.
