images-21Es imposible entender el momento actual sin profundizar en el concepto de cultura de masas. Todos debemos tomar partido ante esta realidad que nos envuelve y sobre la que sabemos muy poco por una resistencia a conocerla en profundidad. Cualquier intento de nombrarla y darle significado implica el calificativo de elitista. Por eso adelanto, que la igualdad de todos por el hecho de nacer hombres me parece el valor más defendible, pero la diferencia, la única manera de mantener la libertad y sostener la cultura.

El desprecio de las masas es un libro que pretende transmitir que la cultura constituye el conjunto de tentativas encaminadas a provocar a la masa que está dentro de nosotros y a tomar partido contra ella.

Es un ensayo sobre las luchas culturales de la sociedad moderna. Un libro que describe a la masa como una subjetividad con voluntad e historia que ha terminado con el idealismo, con el saber, la voluntad y el alma. De manera que al no admitir la diferencia vertical, crea una homogeneidad desde la que es imposible crear.

Hace un recorrido por la preocupación filosófica sobre este tema y resulta muy interesante entender el pensamiento de Marx o Heidegger en el contexto de la vida social.

También hace una reflexión sobre, por ejemplo, la llegada de Hitler al poder gracias a la masa. No eran seguidores de alguien superior, eran seguidores de alguien que podía ser como ellos. La política parece también guiada por la necesidad de que la masa se identifique con ella.

Lo que más interesa a esta página de libros es la parte en la que habla del cambio de valores culturales, Por ejemplo el sabio es sustituido por el intelectual, de manera que desaparece la posibilidad de la sabiduría. Allí donde el saber pierde su papel de fundamento en el ámbito de la realidad objetiva y no pasa a ser más que un medio para desarrollar conjeturas, así como un instrumento de ayuda para hacer elecciones dilematicas, se autoconsolida la avanzada democracia de la información como una suerte de asamblea de ignorantes casi similares que, envueltos en este claroscuro general, buscan en este lado de lo trágico soluciones relativamente mejores a sus, relativamente generalizables, problemas vitales.

De manera que el pensamiento ya no podrá conformar la materia informe, se acabó el idealismo. La imposibilidad de diferenciarse de manera vertical, el rechazo al genio, al santo, a cualquiera que se desmarque hacia arriba, hace que las distinciones sean mínimas, sólo posibles horizontalmente, Masa obliga, y de la masa como materia oscura propia del siglo XIX como frente de fuerza para el cambio social, se pasa a una masa molecular, donde hay pequeñas diferencias, es decir, individualidades que no pueden serlo con libertad, que comparten la categoría de masa y que viven en una soledad infinita con respecto a las otras moléculas.

¡Prioridad de la democracia frente al arte! El talento debe amoldarse a la masa, de manera que sus ocurrencias la alimenten y no vayan contra sus principios. Los artistas pasan a depender directamente de su público.

No hay soluciones para este fenómeno en el libro, simplemente pretende concienciar para poder despegar esas moléculas y terminar con la dictadura d ela masa. Está muy bien explicado cómo resulta imposible criticarla sin parecer alguien desestabilizador y elitista. Personalmente creo que la educación en el pensamiento solucionaría el problema, pero eso ya presupone libertad de pensamiento, de manera que unos llegarían más lejos que otros. Así que otro valor superior a la inteligencia tendría que actuar como elemento estabilizador, pertenece a esos valores que ahora dan vergüenza como la generosidad, honestidad, honradez, reconocimiento… Muy difícil, como cuenta el libro, con la desaparición de la posibilidad de ascender, que tengan cabida. Una amiga me contaba cómo esos valores habían sido fatales, creando verdaderos monstruos,es verdad que eso ha ocurrido en gente que los aplicaba sin haberlos interiorizado, quizás por ahí venga el pudor a nombrarlos, por miedo. En fin, este libro, por lo menos obliga a plantearse la situación.

  1. Ya que traes aquí a la masa y a los políticos os contaré una anecdota muy interesante. Ocurrió en los EE.UU. en los años ’80 y por tanto nadie puede decir que la traigo a colación porque tenga que ver con políticos en el ejercicio del cargo en la actualidad.

    Un joven estudiante de Ciencia Políticas en la U.C.L.A. quiso entrevistarse con el director de campaña de un candidato presidencial, le recibió junto con su ayudante, pero le pidió que fuese breve porque tenía muy poco tiempo.

    – Señor director, le dijo, veo que tienen un candidato, al que después tienen que enseñar a hablar, buscar la imagen mas agradable para el votante, moderar aquellas ideas que pueden crear controversia, vestirle con cálidos colores,… hasta construir un hombre nuevo. Yo creo, con toda modestia, que sería mucho mejor hacerlo al revés, es decir buscar la persona que tuviese todas las cualidades, independientemente de sus ideas, hacerle candidato y vendérselo a los votantes, así el éxito estaría asegurado.

    El director de campaña, delante de su ayudante, abrió un cajón de su escritorio del que sacó una pistola y apuntando en la cabeza del estudiante disparó.

    El ayudante atónito dijo a su jefe: «¡Pero que ha hecho!», hizo un chasquido con los labios y añadió: «había descubierto nuestro secreto».

    Así, cuando dice Sloterdijk que lo que pretende es «… provocar a la masa que está dentro de nosotros y a tomar partido contra ella»; tengo muchas dudas de que aún estemos a tiempo para eso.

  3. Me parece que lo que hace cambiar a las personas no es tanto el aprendizaje como la intuición, el amor, o cosas extraordinarias que pasan. Todos hemos mamado la cultura de masas y arrancarla de nosotros es un auténtico calvario. Los minimalistas piensan que es imposible y el problema es que esa monotonía en la que nos sumerge la homogeneidad nos hace inmensamente tristes. Yo creo que hay que luchar contra eso, por lo de la tristeza.

  9. Hola Crítica preguntona, perdona que no te haya contestado antes. Justamente este es un libro que explica muy bien todas las preguntas que te haces, te recomiendo que lo leas. También hay novelas recomendadas aquí sobre la masa como un fenómeno que se produce en el cambio al Nuevo Régimen y que explica bastante bien la posibilidad de regímenes totalitarios. «Diario de un desesperado» o «Fabián». Digamos que una vez somos todos iguales y soberanos, para que eso pueda ser real es necesaria una educación que permita que cada uno pueda decidir su vida sin dejarse llevar por lo que domina a la mayoría. Ese dominio que es tan fácil de ejercer sobre grandes cantidades de personas es lo que crea un poder muy coaccionante disfrazado de democracia.
