La autora cuenta en una entrevista qué significa la metáfora del faisán:
“He escrito un libro titulado El hombre es un gran faisán en el mundo. Ése es un giro rumano. En rumano es muy frecuente decir “He vuelto a ser un faisán”, que significa: “He vuelto a fracasar”, “No lo he logrado”. O sea, en rumano el faisán es un perdedor, mientras en alemán es un arrogante fanfarrón. Como se sabe, el faisán es un ave incapaz de volar, vive en el suelo. Cuando empiezas a cazar y todavía no sabes hacerlo bien, cazas faisanes. La presa más fácil, puesto que el faisán no puede escapar. Los rumanos han incorporado ese rasgo a su metáfora. ¿Y cuál han tomado los alemanes para la suya? Las plumas, el plumaje, lo cual es muy superficial. La vida del animal no interesa a la metáfora alemana; a los rumanos les interesa la existencia del ave, y eso me fascina.”
Al final del post, dejaré un link con una reseña sobre su forma de escribir.
Lo que a mí me interesa ver es dónde recae esta forma de ser faisánica. ¿Uno es un perdedor por raza, por pertenecer a un pueblo que habla alemán en medio de un país donde se habla rumano?
Los habitantes del pueblo donde discurre la acción, no tienen ninguna relación con los rumanos. Han tenido relación con la guerra, unos se han muerto y otros han vuelto envueltos en una deshonestidad, impudicia, suciedad. Esto es lo que se respira en el lugar donde la gente vive para subsistir sin ningún otro aliciente, pero con una terrible sombra. En vez de ser empujados por la idea de construir algo, son empujados por una sombra que va detrás y de alguna manera los aspira.
Pero aun así, la guerra no justifica esta forma de ser faisánica, porque los hijos, que no la han vivido, están abocados a la muerte o al desequilibrio simplemente por ser la continuación de un grupo de hombres que viven cerca pero no conviven.
Si la guerra tampoco justifica esa forma de ser, habrá que buscar en lo que se nos cuenta otras causas. Y tenemos algo terrible, la falta de relación entre todos los personajes. Cada uno de ellos es molinero, guardián nocturno, sastre, carpintero o peletero, pero no tienen ningún otro papel porque no existen las relaciones personales. Las mujeres son sólo mujeres de estos hombres, y ser mujer de estos hombres significa ser un cuerpo al que levantar la falda, nada más salvo también ser objeto de una rabia que tiene que ver con soportar su sumisión. No hay palabras, sólo reproches con gestos. El molinero y el guardián de noche hablan para dejar claro cómo es el mundo: “los judíos corrompen el mundo. Los judíos y las mujeres.” Han sido de la Wehrmacht y quieren emigrar a Alemania.
No tienen valores, hay una explicación de hambre y frío en la guerra que no convence, como si fuera un cuento que de tan oído no sirve. La falta de valores parece que viene de mucho antes, de esa falta de comunicación, de no entrar en las casas de otros, de no compartir nada. Nadie tiene ni sola idea y nadie protesta ante ninguna barbaridad. Esos mismos, eso sí es creíble, eran de la Wehrmacht y todavía ponen su traje para comulgar. El catolicismo es una tradición vacía, sin contenido, el cura es sólo cura, como el peletero es peletero.
Dentro de esa falta de valores que les hace vivir a ras de tierra, hay un tema crucial, que es el odio entre hombres y mujeres cuando no existe una relación más allá de lo físico. Hay alcoholismo, hay maltrato, físico de un lado, psicológico del otro. Cuando no se puede ver a la mujer más que como cuerpo esta se convierte en una especie de monstruo también, una vez rebajada a otra categoría, el hombre tampoco sale bien parado y aparece la ira con esa doblez de ser marido y padre, del no aceptar en la hija el futuro de la madre, sin hacer nada para evitarlo.
La novela describe uno más de los muchos mundos en los que sus habitantes no llegan a ser personas y sólo cumplen un papel. Hace tiempo hice una reseña de El profundo Sur, el mismo problema en Argentina, la misma negación de la mujer. Estaba escrito por un hombre, este está escrito por una mujer y cuentan lo mismo y de la misma manera: no hay naturaleza, los árboles o flores crujen secos, o se fagocitan porque tampoco se relacionan con el hombre, no hay diálogos, los personajes tiran frases como si hablasen solos, hay suciedad en las casas, las calles, los vestidos, los gestos. En este caso me parece que tiene más fuerza porque resulta más creíble por su contexto familiar.
Habría que reflexionar sobre la frase de la autora: “¿Y cuál han tomado los alemanes para la suya? Las plumas, el plumaje, lo cual es muy superficial. La vida del animal no interesa a la metáfora alemana; a los rumanos les interesa la existencia del ave, y eso me fascina.”
¿Puede existir el ave como si no tuviera plumas? ¿Es la existencia algo dado que sólo se puede asumir?
La existencia sólo puede tener un objetivo: la felicidad. Tengo la sensación de que después de escribir en varios post de esta misma página, el discurso deviene en repetitivo, pero es que no se puede decir otra cosa, yo al menos no puede decir algo distinto.
La diferencia es el camino que sigues para conseguirla. Tener palabras para iniciar el discurso. La propia Herta cuando le llamó el Secretario de la Academia Sueca para anunciarle que había recibido el galardón del Premio Nobel de Literatura 2009 dijo: «Me he quedado sin palabras. Espero recuperarlas para el discurso en la Academia».
Así, en esta paradoja del faisán, que aquí lo traduciríamos como «la he vuelto a cagar», lo importante no es el plumaje, ni el fracaso; lo importante es el objetivo… que no vueles no es demérito, las gallinas -tan próximas a nosotros- tampoco lo hacen y son de la familia de aquellos; y el medio es el camino a recorrer para conseguir ese objetivo.
Esta tarde oyendo a Raimon Solà en su discurso de «Como ser feliz cada día» me ha impresionado algo que dice: «Al morir nos llevaremos todo lo que hemos dado», es curioso que nos hable de que nos llevaremos lo que hemos dado, que grande sería entonces poder darnos a nosotros mismos, porque al dar, al darnos no perdemos nada sino que todo lo que damos se reproduce en nosotros.
Hace muchos años me contaron la anécdota siguiente: «Un Pordiosero supo que en el reino al que pertenecia, el riquísimo gobernador se paseaba por las calles haciendo valiosos regalos. Un día se anunció que visitaría su pueblo, y al siguiente que pasaría por la calle en la que estaba su humilde chabola. Esperó con inquietud su llegada, cuando se iba acercando notó la ansiedad, y vió a lo lejos como iba sacando de su rico carruaje regalos para todos. Cuando llegó frente al Pordiosero, el gobernador le extendió la mano pidiéndole alguna cosa, el Pordiosero estupefacto metió la mano en su zurrón y le entregó un grano de maiz. Cuando entró en la chabola, con una tristeza infinita -toda la vida esperando y resulta que cuando llega en lugar de darle le pide, a él, al más pobre de todos-, volcó el contenido del zurrón y vió que entre los granos de maiz había uno de oro. Que amargamente lloró no habérselo dado todo».
De manera que el mundo que se nos narra, en la obra de Herta Müller, en el que sus habitantes nos llegan a ser personas, y en el que sólo cumplen un papel. No es mundo. Es, claro, un teatro, una representación… y yo no creo tanto que el problema resida en la negación de la mujer, en su ignorancia; el problema está en que todos, mujeres y hombres, tantas veces vamos por el camino equivocado.
Fabián, no he hablado de ignorancia, he hablado de la falta de comunicación entre hombres y mujeres como clave a la hora de tener una sociedad medianamente digna. Y para que esa comunicación exista, la mujer tiene que ser algo más que un cuerpo, y claro, los hombres también. Sólo que en este tipo de novela, parece que el hombre, al moverse todo en el plano físico, es el más fuerte y acaba creando situaciones violentas y la mujer responde desde el rencor, que también es violencia.
Vamos, que son unos animales, faisanes o gallinas. Pero léete el libro a ver qué opinas.
He sido yo el que me he explicado mal. Cuando digo «no creo tanto que el problema resida en la negación de la mujer, en su ignorancia»; no me refiero a que la mujer sea negada, sino a que la niegan; no a que sea ignorante, sino a que es ignorada. Lo siento.
Te iba a decir que tengo muy limitado el acceso al libro, pero sin resistirme he ido al estante y ¡albricias! ahí estaba, de manera que me pongo a la tarea que me encomiendas y mañana o pasado te digo mi opinión.
Esperaba una apacible lectura de un par de horas y ha representado una especie de tortura, y el «mañana o pasado» se ha convertido en dos semanas. Todo el libro es una lucha por salir del agujero, como la misma vida de la autora. Es un camino para sortear la infamia, abrazándose a la feroz corrupción que alcanza al cura en su cama de hierro de la sacristía. De todo el relato me quedo con la universalidad literaria de «El sepulturero es rumano. Apoya la pala contra su vientre. Se persigna. Escupe en sus manos. Empieza a llenar la tumba.» Siempre es igual.
Me ha resultado muy curioso el sistema de puntuación que utiliza, siempre con puntos y seguidos olvidando los demás signos; para los que tenemos dificultades con la puntuación, es un recurso impagable.
