Sólo se me ocurriría escribir sobre mis memorias para resucitar a mis muertos. Supongo que hay algo de eso en este libro, de intentar que no mueran nunca. Y de paso resucitar todo el mundo que creaban. Porque se mueren las personas y se mueren los mundos, una de las ideas que sabemos pero que nos repetimos como si no lo termináramos de creer.

La intención de resucitar es física, que estén ahí todos presentes, pero ya que los saco a todos, vendría a pensar este narrador, los voy a ordenar. Y quizás sea eso este libro de memoria, un intento de dignificar vidas que no dejaron vivir.

En estos momentos decadentes la memoria es más necesaria que nunca para entender cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí. Y eso es lo que más me gusta de esta narración. Asistimos a un problema nacional grave y crónico, que está ejemplificado en Galicia, pero que ya Ortega y Gasset veía prácticamente irresoluble en 1914 para todo el territorio español. Cuando hablaba de que yo soy yo y mi circunstancia y si no la salvo a ella no me salvo yo, tenía presente la falta de cohexión social, la falta de una sociedad de posibilidades y la necesidad de empezar de nuevo desde una base sólida. La crítica rabiosa que hace en esa búsqueda nunca fue resaltada. Los versos de Curros Enriquez que aparecen en mitad de este libro: “ai, dos que levan na fronte unha estrela, ai, dos que levan no bico un cantar” , resultan terroríficos como descripción de un espacio vital y todavía están vigentes.

Ese espacio vital no es una idea poética, justamente este libro es un conjunto de imágenes que lo muestran. Ahí están dos mundos: el del pueblo y el del poder limitante, amorfo, que no da la cara, que no tiene contenido, cuyo único objetivo es limitar.

Esas imágenes están seleccionadas desde el niño que toma las palabras como salida y termina en un periódico con la ilusión de tener un medio de comunicación. El pueblo tiene que sobrevivir y lo hace con el trabajo y las palabras. Las palabras son las que permiten la dignidad, van creando una tela protectora, un mundo cimentado en historias para no olvidar lo humano.

Las historias son una forma enseñar, de tener intimidad, de vincularse, de superar la circunstancia limitante, de reírse, en el fondo, de libertad. La vida para estos personajes, que resulta que son reales, es una especie de anarquía profundamente limitada por algo a lo que no te puedes enfrentar. El poder nunca da la cara, está ahí incluso cuando llega la democracia, como si nunca se fuera a ir. El verdadero poder limitante es una especie de corrupción boba, que por supuesto no tiene palabras.

La noticia del periódico sobre la hermana ,“la hija de un albañil gana un concurso de redacción”, es exactamente la imagen de una sociedad que desconoce donde están las palabras. Es el triunfo de la imbecilidad, la falta de cultura. Una de las maravillas de la literatura es que identifica los poderes limitantes que en la vida cotidiana resultan escurridizos y este es uno de ellos: los que tienen voz, no tienen palabras.

La dignidad de construirse a sí mismo es un valor difícil de ver en estos momentos, llegar a preparar tu cama para morir, como hace la madre, resulta impensable, pero esa dignidad, algo magnífico, lleva implícita la vergüenza social de no haber tenido un espacio para construir, para comunicarse. Y ahí es donde podemos reconocer lo que nos ha traído hasta hoy, el haber dado poder a esa imbecilidad oculta, el no haber sabido reconocer donde estaban las palabras.

Este libro no es una novela, es una memoria que quiere ordenar y precisamente dar reconocimiento a los olvidados, no humillados y ofendidos, olvidados, tapados por un poder no inteligente. Y a eso añado un punto de partida emocional, la impotencia que producen unas circunstancias en las que acontece una muerte prematura.
