LITERATURA Y SENSIBILIDAD

La sensibilidad, que es subjetiva y que nos permite conocer lo que está fuera de nosotros, se construye. Quiero decir con esto, que nacemos con unas posibilidades y morimos con unas capacidades que superan esas posibilidades o están por debajo de ellas. ¿Y por qué escribo esto? Porque leyendo narrativa postmoderna, la buena, resulta pavoroso lo que cuenta. No es sólo una crítica a las estructuras sociales que no permiten desarrollarnos, es una descripción muy “aquilatada” de algo terrorífico: la ausencia de sensibilidad en cada uno de los personajes que nos representan a todos, la imposibilidad, por lo tanto, de conocer absolutamente nada de lo que hay fuera del yo. Hoy publicaban en el país un fragmento del libro de Foster Wallace, La escoba del sistema, donde un obeso quiere llenar el vacío de su yo con comida. En otros libros de Wallace aparecen jóvenes que gastan, literalmente gastan, sus vidas en hacerse jugadores profesionales de tenis, o que se matan a base de drogas, en cualquier caso, siempre empeñados en acciones que en lugar de explusar el vacío, lo aumentan.

El concepto vacío está tan manido que ya no significa nada, ha sido asumido como quien asume una frase hecha. Todo lo que se ha dicho de él no ha calado en absoluto porque las causas que se dan resultan demasiado abstractas, el ocio, la opulencia, la falta de amor, son ideas que no nos llegan. Lo entendemos pero no no lo identificamos. ¿Hay que sufrir para no estar vacíos? Se ha llegado a decir que la gente ansía un fin del mundo pararomper con este sistema de vida, en el fondo, hay algo animal ahí latente. Si es verdad que el amor es humano, que estamos diseñados para tener relaciones fraternales, por decirlo de alguna manera, si sólo nos llenamos con una intersubjetivad plena, ¿por qué no lo hacemos? No podemos hacerlo, no es que no queramos, hay una incapacidad.

La Literatura postmoderna describe, no responde a esta pregunta. Como lectora de novelas, confieso que reconociendo la genialidad en estas descripciones que ponen delante ese mundo abarrotado de yoes vacíos que nunca llegarán a comunicarse, me siento completamente frustrada ante la renuncia explícita de intentar saber por qué ocurre eso. Con esta frustración me coloco fuera de juego en el sistema literario, sin embargo, no puedo remediarlo. Y juntando estas lecturas con lo que veo, leo, escucho y siento, he llegado a la conclusión de que en las críticas necesarias que se hacen a nuestra sociedad, hay una aterradora, que no se toca, la pérdida de sensibilidad, que ya no responde a la sociedad, un ente abstracto imposible de echarle mano, sino a cada uno de sus miembros, los que supuestamente sólo llegan a su plenitud en la intersubjetividad.

El gordo de Wallace que quiere llenar su vacío con comida, en realidad lo que quiere es aumentar su vacío hasta que explote, en estas novelas aparecen cientos de lentos y semiinconscientes suicidios reales: todos aquellos que responden a la ansiedad de llenar el vacío, ansiedad producida por la falta de recursos ante una sensacion que lo ocupa todo. Son los famosos procesos de comer hasta el fin o no comer hasta el fin, dormir hasta que duele el cuerpo o no dormir nunca, llegar a hacerse daño físicamente arrancándose el pelo o con pequeños cortes, tomar drogas para borrar los límites del yo o beber como quien se cae por un precipicio, o gritar para romper al que no se comprende o pegar para exterminar lo que nos hace vernos, o directamente matar y matarnos contra los cuerpos que se vuelven ajenos, o ver pelis de vampiros donde esos cuerpos ya no responden a nada o comprar hasta que revienten las bolsas. En fin, en cualquier caso acabar con el tiempo, llegar al fin, dejar de vivir. El tiempo, que es lo único que tenemos, se convierte en un enemigo brutal, por eso, en su fehaciente descripción de nuestra época, las narraciones postmodernas prescinden de él. Lo que nos cuentan están fuera del antes y el después, es la vivencia terrorífica de la ausencia de tiempo, la ausencia de hechos que marquen un antes y un después.

Y todo esto, una locura, podemos pensar, viene a santo de qué. No es que otras épocas fueran momentos de paz y amor, pero no existía el vacío general, todavía no se había perdido el contacto con lo real, es decir, la sensación de realidad que produce la experiencia, el contacto directo con lo otro, con lo distinto, no el pensamiento sobre lo otro, sino el conocimiento de lo otro, que es bien diferente.

Las maravillosas descripciones postmodernas no nos permiten visualizar, ni oler, ni sentir, en el momento que eso ocurriese, el vacío que se quiere describir dejaría de existir En realidad nos está contando que esquematizamos nuestro mundo sin verlo en absoluto, es más, que cada uno de nosotros actuamos en la manera en que se espera que actuemos según el esquema que representamos, ya no el papel, como antes, sino el esquema. Uno de los logros de Foster Wallace en La broma infinita es la de colocar en hospitales psiquiátricos a los personajes incapaces de representar su esquema, o conscientes, como si les quedara un vestigio de un pasado humano, de que la vida que no llevan no se puede soportar.

Y todo esto está producido por una pérdida de la sensibilidad para ver lo que está fuera del yo. Es decir, unas capacidades mermadas por un camino de vida virtual ya comenzado y fomentado hace muchos años. Un cuadro no puede estar en un museo, una celebración no se puede hacer en un local preparado para celebraciones, una película o un documental no sustituye el conocimiento que necesitamos tener de lo que nos rodea. No podemos asistir a la matanza que está ocurriendo a tiempo real en cualquier país del mundo tomando un helado, no podemos observar pájaros o plantas metidas en un cubículo. No se puede hablar de lo que se supone que hay que hablar. Tenemos infinitos ejemplos de la sustitución de experiencias reales, es decir, en las que toma parte la sensibilidad y aparecen las intuiciones, que son abiertas y no cerradas, por sucedaneos, conocimientos esquemáticos de tercera o cuarta mano, que reconocemos como tales y aceptamos ya como vida normal.

Lo único que no se puede enseñar virtualmente es a sentir. Lo único que no cuesta dinero es sentir. Lo único que no costaba esfuerzo era sentir. Ahora se convertirá en el super ocio, pagar para tocar, oler o mirar. Sentir a la carta, sin que lo otro aparezca delante, enjaular lo otro, crear una nueva raza humana que llega a dominar su propia capacidad.

Plantar un árbol en mitad de una descripción postmoderna rompería con todo. La pregunta es: ¿Todavía queda sensibilidad para sentir un árbol en un texto? No sé si se puede reconocer la presencia de un árbol en un texto si no se ha tenido la experiencia de lo real de un árbol.
