O RETRATO. Alfonso R. Castelao

El cuento breve es el mejor instrumento para ver la esencia de la narrativa. Una escena, una pequeña experiencia tiene tan alto grado de significación que de alguna manera se narra a sí misma. Castelao es uno de los mejores ejemplos de narrativa breve. El efecto que producen las frases que acompañan a un dibujo es el de despertar a realidades tan cercanas que por eso nos resultan ocultas. En este caso, o retrato, un cuento breve, trata del tema más horrible, la muerte de un niño y lo coloca en el contexto de la perpelejidad. La perplejidad ante la existencia de un dolor tan inhumano sólo puede llevar a reacciones excéntricas. Y esas reacciones excéntricas, que se pueden ver como incoherentes, están llenas de sentido. Una escena tan corta cuenta algo tan difícil como el dolor. La potencia del efecto está en utilizar materiales tan cotidianos, tan mínimos para llegar a lo inabarcable.

El retrato
Para tranquilizar la conciencia eché mi título de médico en el fondo de la gaveta y busqué otro tipo de trabajo para vivir. Las gentes ya no sabían que yo era dueño de tan terrible licencia oficial; pero una noche fueron solicitados mis servicios.

Era domingo. Melchor, el tabernero, me esperaba junto a la puerta. Me dio las «buenas noches» y rompió a llorar, y por entre los sollozos le salían las palabras tan estrujadas, que solamente logró decirme que tenía un hijo a punto de morir.

El pobre padre tiraba de mí, y yo me dejaba llevar, cautivado por su dolor. ¡En realidad, yo era médico titulado y no podía negarme! Y tuve tan fuertes ansias de complacerlo, que sentí brotar en mis adentros una gran ciencia…

Cuando llegamos a la casa de Melchor, conseguí desprenderme de sus manos, y con disimulada pena le confesé que sabía poco de la carrera…

-Piensa que hace muchos años que no visito enfermos.

Y entonces Melchor, haciendo un esfuerzo, me dijo pausadamente:

-Mi hijo ya no necesita médicos. Yo ya sé que el pobre no sale de esta noche. ¡Y se me va, señor; se me va y no tengo ningún retrato suyo!

¡Ay!, yo no había sido llamado como médico, yo había sido llamado como retratista, y al instante sentí ganas amargas de echarme a reír.

Y por verme libre de trabajo tan macabro le dije que una fotografía era mejor que un dibujo, le aseguré que por la noche pueden hacerse fotografías, y echando mano de muchos razonamientos logré que Melchor se apartase de mí en busca de un fotógrafo.

La cosa quedaba arreglada, y me fui a dormir con mil ideas enredadas en la cabeza.

Cuando estaba cogiendo el sueño llamaron a mi puerta. Era Melchor.

-¡Los fotógrafos dicen que no tienen magnesio!

Y me lo dijo temblando de angustia. La cara muy pálida y los ojos como dos pezones de carne roja de tanto llorar.

Jamás vi un hombre tan deshecho por el dolor.

Suplicaba, suplicaba, y me cogía las manos, y tiraba de mí, y el desdichado decía cosas que me abrían las entrañas:

-Tenga consideración, señor. Dos trazos de usted en un papel y ya podré mirar siempre la carita de mi niño. ¡No me deje en la oscuridad, señor!

¡Quién tendría corazón para negarse! Cogí papel y lápiz y allá me fui con Melchor dispuesto a hacer un retrato del muchacho moribundo.

Todo estaba en calma y todo estaba silencioso. Una luz mortecina alumbraba, en amarillo, dos caras estremecedoras que olfateaban la muerte. El niño era el centro de aquella pobreza de la materia.

Sin decir nada, me senté a dibujar lo que contemplan mis ojos de tierra, y solamente al cabo de algún tiempo conseguí acostumbrarme al drama que presenciaba y aun olvidarlo un poco, para poder trabajar, entusiasmado, como un artista. Y cuando el dibujo estaba ya en su punto, la voz de Melchor, agrandada por tanto silencio, me hirió con estas palabras:

-Por el alma de sus difuntos, no me lo retrate así. ¡No le ponga esa cara tan cadavérica y tan triste!

Confieso que al volver a la realidad no supe qué hacer y me puse a repasar las líneas ya trazadas del retrato. El silencio fue roto nuevamente por Melchor:

-Usted bien sabe cómo era mi niño. Haga memoria, señor, y dibújemelo riendo.

De repente surgió en mí una gran idea. Rompí el trabajo, concentré mi mirada en un nuevo papel blanco y dibujé un niño imaginario. Inventé un niño muy bonito, muy bonito: un ángel de retablo barroco sonriendo.

Entregué el dibujo y salí huyendo, y, en el momento de poner el pie en la calle, oí que lloraban dentro de la casa. La muerte había llegado.

Ahora Melchor se consuela mirando mi obra, que está colgada encima de la cómoda, y siempre dice con la mejor fe del mundo:

-He tenido muchos hijos, pero el más bonito de todos fue el que se me murió. Ahí está el retrato, que no miente.

O pobre pai turraba por min, e eu deixábame levar, enfeitizado pola súa dor. ¡Despois de todo eu era médico titulado e non podía negarme! E tiven tan fortes anceios de compracelo que sentín xurdir nos meus adentros unha grande ciencia…

Cando chegamos á casa de Melchor logrei arriarme das súas mans, e con finxido acoitamento confeseille que sabía pouco da carreira…
…..-Repara que hai moitos anos que non visito enfermos.
E entón Melchor, facendo un esforzo, díxome quedamente:

-O meu fillo xa non precisa de médicos. Eu xa sei que o coitado non pasa da noite. E váiseme, señor; ¡váiseme e non teño ningún retrato seu!

Ai, eu non fora chamado como médico; eu fora chamado como retratista, e no intre sentín ganas acedas de botarme a rir.

E por verme ceibe de xeira tan macabra díxenlle que unha fotografía era mellor ca un deseño, asegureille que de noite poden facerse fotografías, e botando man de moitos razonamentos logrei que Melchor largase de min á cata dun fotógrafo. A cousa quedaba arrombada, e funme durmir, con mil ideas ensarilladas na chola.

Cando estaba prendendo no sono petaron na miña porta. Era Melchor.

-¡Os fotógrafos din que non teñen magnesio!
E díxomo tremendo de anguria. A face albeira, e os ollos coma dous tetos de carne vermella de tanto chorar.
Endexamais fitei a un home tan desfeito pola dor.
Pregaba, pregaba, e collíame as mans, e turraba por min, e o malpocado dicía cousas que me rachaban as entrañas:
-Considérese, señor. Dous riscos de vostede nun papel e xa poderei ollar sempre a cariña do meu neno. ¡Non me deixe na escuridade, señor!

¡Quen teria corazón para negarse! Collín papel e lápiz, e alá me fun con Melchor, disposto a facer un retrato do rapaz moribundo.

Todo estaba quedo e todo estaba calado. Unha luz cansa alumeaba, en amarelo, dúas facianas arrepiantes que ventaban a morte. O neno era o centro daquela pobreza da materia.

Sen dicir nada senteime a debuxa­lo que ollaban os meus ollos de terra, e soamente ó cabo dalgún tempo conseguín afacerme ó drama que fitaba e aínda esquecelo un pouco, para poder traballar afervoado, coma un artista. E cando o deseño estaba xa no seu punto a voz de Melchor, agrandada por tanto silencio, feriume con estas verbas:

-Pola alma dos seus defuntos, non mo retrate así. ¡Non lle poña esa cara tan encoveirada e tan triste!

Confeso que ó volver á realidade non souben que facer, e púxenme a repasa­las liñas xa feitas do retrato. O silencio foi esgazado novamente por Melchor:
-Vostede ben sabe como era o meu rapaciño. Faga memoria, señor, e debúxemo rindo.

De súpeto naceume unha grande idea. Rachei o traballo, ensumín o meu ollar nun novo papel branco e debuxei un neno imaxinario. Inventei un neno moi bonito, moi bonito: un anxo de retábulo barroco, a sorrir.

Entreguei o debuxo e saín fuxindo, e no intre de poñe-lo pé na rúa sentin que choraban dentro da casa. A morte viñera.

Agora Melchor consólase ollando a miña obra, que está pendurada enriba da cómoda, e sempre di coa mellor fe do mundo:

-Tiven moitos fillos, pero o máis bonito de todos foi o que me morreu. Velaí está o retrato que non mente.
