PARECE UNA TONTERÍA. Raymond Carver. Ejercicio de lectura
En este cuento, Raymond Carver utiliza un recurso narrativo muy fácil de ver. Se trata del efecto expresivo.
Como cualquier arte, la literatura es una forma de comunicación. Hay un autor, alguien que se siente impresionado por la realidad y tiene la necesidad de expresar esa impresión. Este es el camino para llegar a otro, el lector, que tendrá que quedar impresionado a su manera, pero por el mismo objeto. Pero para que esto suceda, hay que dar con la fórmula adecuada. El material del escritor son las palabras, que tendrá que ordenarlas de una forma determinada.
La expresión se mueve en el ámbito de la emoción, porque alguien impresionado, está emocionado necesariamente. Los tipos de emociones son infinitos si atendemos a matices, que es donde se mueve la literatura. Y desde esa emoción que acompaña a la impresión sobre la realidad que tiene el escritor, trabaja con las palabras transmitiéndosela a otro.
El efecto expresivo, sería una emoción creada con palabras para transmitir algo. La literatura no es información, de manera que la realidad no se cuenta con hechos, sino con acontecimientos, es decir, hechos con significado, hechos que sobresalen en la cadena de acciones.
Bien, en Parece una tontería, uno de los mejores textos de Carver, el acontecimiento es algo terrible que sucede en el contexto de máxima normalidad, cotidianidad, y sobre todo, estandaridad. En medio de este acontecimiento, los personajes sufren un cambio y para contarlo, Carver utiliza efectos expresivos. Hay un efecto expresivo para contar el contexto de la acción, otro para contar el estado mental que suscitan los hechos y otro diferente para describir el cambio de los personajes.
Propongo la lectura del relato y compartir los efectos expresivos, pensar en qué emociones suscita en cada momento y con qué medios lo consigue.
Parece una tontería es un cuento dentro del libro de relatos:

Me gusta mucho como empieza: «El sábado por la tarde fue a la pastelería del centro comercial. Después de mirar las fotografías de pasteles pegadas en las páginas de una especie de álbum, encargó uno de chocolate, el preferido de su hijo».
Pero mucho más como acaba: «Hablaron hasta que el amanecer arrojó una luz pálida por las altas ventanas, y ni se les ocurría marcharse.»
No todos los escritores lo hacen como un camino para llegar al lector, muchos lo hacen como una necesidad y cumplida esta con lo escrito, no necesitan nada más. Trabajan con palabras si, pero no necesariamente para transmitirselas a otros. Algunos han destruído su obra después de crearla. Otros se la han pedido a terceros y el ejemplo de Kafka es uno que tenemos muy próximo en estas páginas.
En todo caso y trás esta necesaria aclaración, me pongo, como un aplicado alumno a la lectura y te y os cuento las emociones que me trasmite Carver con sus efectos expresivos.
Acabo de leerlo. Me ha producido una conmoción. Me parece un relato rotundo que te transmite sensaciones y sentimientos a todo el cuerpo y toda el alma.
Intentaré analizar lo que nos pides en este ejercicio. Respecto del contexto en que se desarrolla la acción, lo primero es la relación frente al pastelero, la incomodidad de Ann por la falta de entusiasmo por el encargo, su asepsia, que le provoca una sensación incomoda y siente que el trato del pastelero es brusco. Luego me ha sorprendido el efecto que utiliza tras el atropello, cuando el amigo, con el que comparte la bolsa de patatas, le pregunta que se siente cuando le atropellan a uno, y la indignación por la huída del conductor que se da a la fuga.
El estado mental que se deriva de los hechos es -y perdonad que utilice una expresión que suena tan mal- acojonante, porque existe la autocomplacencia por todo lo bien que les ha ido la vida primero, y el autoconvencimiento después de que todo se solucionará felizmente. Cuando se cuentan que han rezado, que las palabras salían solas, es el modo de convencerse a ellos mismos de que ya no puede pasar nada malo.
Por último el cambio, en Ann fundamentalmente, que pasa de querer matar al autor de las llamadas… de verle retorcerse después de darle tres tiros, a la sensación de querer oírle cuando habla de su soledad, su sensación de duda y sus limitaciones por los años de madurez. Esto es lo mismo que piensa en su primer encuentro: tiene los años suficientes para tener hijos, y hasta nietos, de conocer las fiestas y las celebraciones… pero no es así; él mismo confiesa que solo es pastelero, que quizás hace años fuese un ser humano diferente, pero que ahora sólo es pastelero. Lo cual piensa que le otorga ventajas frente a los floristas porque le permite alimentar a la gente, que es lo que termina haciendo.
Más allá de los tecnicismos tengo que decir que el relato me ha dejado sobrecogido, que casi he intuído el final con el final de Franklin, como si fuesen dos sucesos paralelos. La aparíción de Ann ante los parientes, como si les fuese a traer malas noticias, es la primera pista para conocer que nada terminará bien. Es de esos relatos que te hacen sentir amor por la literatura… que ahora, aunque me desdiga de lo que escribía ayer, se hace para transmitir. Transmitir al lector.
Yo creo que no entiendo todavía bien lo de efecto expresivo, pero atendiendo a la emoción que me transmite, puedo decir que he sentido angustia, o miedo, y al final una especie de situación reconfortante, pero que no va más allá de eso, de un poco reconfortante.
No sé. espero saber más.
Leo sobrecojida, es quiza la primera vez, que leo un relato no solo pensando en las emociones que puede suscitar su lectura, sino sintiendo esas emociones como si yo misma formara parte de ese relato.
Me veo entrando ilusionada en esa pasteleria, eligiendo en el catalogo, lo que mas le gustara a mi hijo para su cumpleaños, siento como para el pastelero es un encargo mas, no le interesa otra cosa, tiene su horno por atender y su musica puesta, toma nota y salgo .
Pero todo cambia, a «mi» Scotty le atropella un coche la mañana de su cumpleaños, parece que reacciona, entra en casa y me lo cuenta. Se que algo no va bien y no quiero verlo, llamare al medico. Todo pasa deprisa, pero como a camara lenta, llamo al padre.
Estamos en el hospital, medicos , pruebas, analisis y miedo. Apartir de aqui se mezcla todo, los gestos fisicos de la impotencia, la carencia de recursos para enfrentarme a un medico y pedirle explicacaciones sobre lo que le pasa a mi hijo, el consuelo de la no explicacion responsable, la esperanza de que el niño despierte, el tiempo que pasa sin que eso suceda, lo que dice la enfermera sin decir nada, el casi imperceptible cambio en el propio medico al hablar de la evolucion.
Los rezos silenciosos, el compartir que he rezado, el ser consciente que hay un Howard a mi lado, el contacto fisico, la caricia, la certeza de que lo que esta pasando es terrible y estoy sola.
Finalmente todo termina, lo sienten mucho, un caso entre….. no se, da igual, no entiendo que pasa, el cansancio es infinito, me tengo
que ir a casa.
Vuelvo llena de rabia a donde todo empieza, la pasteleria , el era el que llamo por las noches, quiero matarle, es mas facil descargar la ira contra el pastelero que aceptar lo sucedido, pero es ese pastelero ausente y sin interes por nada, el que me da el calor de su cafe y su bollo, de su sentimiento por lo que me esta pasando, el que se disculpa y lo siente conmigo, incluso me hace VER que al menos yo he tenido un HIJO, el solo ha tenido soledad en su vida.
A pesar de la angustia y el dolor, alli sentada dejo pasar el tiempo.
Silvia, no se si esto es lo que tu propones como ejercicio, si se que gracias a tu sugerencia, yo he aprendido a leer de otra manera, aunque Carver ayude a ello.
Lo más acojonante es cómo se les desmorona su vida tan perfectamente estéril en el momento en que irrumpe en ellos algo que no habían encargado, que no tenían planeado, parecen quedarse estupefactos ¿ah, pero es que existe la enfermedad y la muerte? En los conjuntos residenciales, tan perfectos, tan asépticos como las sábanas blancas del hospital, como los enfermos entubados un gran vacío, un gran hoyo y dentro, llamándonos, la muerte.
La muerte, Lucio, no nos llama desde un gran hoyo negro y vacío; la muerte está incrustada en nuestras vidas desde el mismo momento en que nos alumbran. El momento del parto es quizá lo mas doloroso que sufrimos por abandonar nuestro lecho líquido, mucho más incluso que la muerte, aunque no lo recordemos. Lo que ocurre es que no estamos preparados para sobrevivir a los hijos, sólo quienes lo han sufrido saben de que hablo.
La muerte, Lucio, sólo es un tránsito que no sabemos cuando llega, y por ello mismo tenemos que estar siempre preparado, para abrazarla como pasión, como lo último que hacemos en esta vida.
Oigan, amigos, aun no he he le leído ese relato. He leído muchas otras cosas de Carver (quien parece que no escribía lo que decía que escribía, y lo hacía otro, que en silencio y oculto (como en el centeno), hacía los cuentos y los firmaba el otro.. en fin, ¿será cierto?
Volviendo a la cuestión: es cierto, no siempre se escribe para ser leído por «otros», a veces sólo es necesario que haya «Otro», que puede ser el mismo escritor. Pero digamos que casi siempre pretendemos tener lectores, somos así de narcisistas… nosotros, los que escribimos.
Y entonces aparecen las emociones que despierta un relato, son las palabras, cargadas de no sé qué, que no informan nada, pero nos revuelcan en un terreno en el cual desconocemos casi todo, por no decir todo…
Perdón por la lata, me voy a conseguir «Catedral» de Carver, o de quien lo haya escrito… después les cuento!

Digo 2debemos», y no exagero con el verbo, es nuestra obligación. Pero no va de suyo que los hijos sobrevivan a los padres, aún cuando esos hijos sean huérfanos. 2Sobrevivir» no sólo es presenciar el entierro del otro, es poder ir más allá de esos señores que nos trajeron a la tierra. Sobrevivirlos significa no quedar atrapados en sus tela-de-arañas, vivir, sí, a su pesar. Claro que está todo eso de lo biológico del ser vivo, pero eso es lo de menos. He conocido muchos tipos, añejos ya, que no han podido sobrevivir a sus padres (padres muertos hacía décadas), y (tomo las palabras de Lucio), te digo que estaban en un agujero, oscuro y vacío, aunque se creían muy vivitos y coleando!
